Background in Cinematography

With a strong background in cinematography, Oliver has high standards for crafting aesthetically pleasing images. He places great emphasis on good composition and enjoys manipulating available light, as well as using lighting in multi-camera interviews to ensure each scene is visually captivating.

A Passion for Storytelling

Oliver cut his teeth in the fast-paced world of news, where he developed a sense of urgency that informs his work. Over many years of collaboration with journalists he has honed his journalistic instincts, enabling him to ask the right questions and shape stories effectively. As a confident editor, he is able to maintain a focus on the bigger picture, ensuring that all elements of a film come together cohesively to tell a meaningful story.

Expertise in Diverse Environments

Oliver has produced content across multiple territories and thrives in dynamic environments. Whether filming in challenging locations such as the Amazon rainforest, at the historic grounds of Auschwitz concentration camp, or behind the goal during a Champions League match in the pouring rain, Oliver adapts effortlessly to any situation.

A keen ability to anticipate moments—whether it’s positioning himself to capture a world leader exiting a limousine or patiently waiting for a celebrity arriving at a red carpet event—can give him an edge over other shooters.

He can be bold when required to capture key shots and has been known to jump over obstacles and is able to skilfully navigate through large gatherings.

Confident in directing on-camera talent and conducting interviews with contributors from all walks of life (including VIPs, celebrities, politicians, and vulnerable people), Oliver adapts to the situation and builds strong relationships with both contributors and talent, using patience, humour, and empathy to bring out their best.

Technical Proficiency

Oliver's technical proficiency allows him to operate a wide variety of digital cameras (from action and mirrorless cameras, over ENG-style and full-frame camcorders to large format camera systems). He does not own his own gear in order to maintain a flexibility to handle project requirements of any budget.

He can adapt quickly to new technology and believes that regardless of the specific brand, all cameras serve as tools for storytelling. He does however favour the workhorses of the industry, such as the Sony A7, FS7, FX9 and PXW-Z750.

Additionally, Oliver holds a drone license (A2 CofC), can operate gimbals and has a solid understanding of audio, grip and lighting equipment.

Character

Happy leading a nomadic lifestyle, Oliver is multilingual, physically fit and always ready for adventure. He seeks beautiful locations and interesting stories, never complaining when the going gets tough—be it enduring a monsoon in a Filipino jungle or working long hours due to unforeseen circumstances.

Although he is capable of working as a one-man band, Oliver thrives in collaborative settings and enjoys being part of a talented crew. His friendly, decisive, and patient nature allows him to work effectively in various environments and prefers location work but is equally committed to seeing projects through the editing stage.

Goals

Oliver’s passion lies predominantly in factual and observational documentaries, where he can easily switch styles from fast-paced “run and gun” setups to well-lit, set-piece interviews.

Currently, Oliver is focused on building his network in the UK to gain credits for major broadcasters and strengthen his reputation as a Shooting Director. He is particularly interested in opportunities in character-led observational documentaries, blue light and natural history productions, as well as working in challenging and hostile environments and places that are off the beaten track.

Beyond shooting, Oliver is strengthening his entrepreneurial spirit and has taken time to develop and launch a successful camera accessory for cinematographers called ‘Cinefade’, which has received industry recognition and is used in high-end films, TV series, and commercials.
